Is Alex Marquez Really Fighting Marc Hard Enough To Win? 

The MotoGP race was a race of two halves. The first, while Pecco Bagnaia still had both front tire and hope that he could lead the race, saw a majestic three-way battle between Bagnaia, Ducati Lenovo teammate Marc Márquez, and Gresini Ducati's Alex Márquez. But once Bagnaia dropped away and Marc Márquez got past Alex, the interest ebbed away.

In the second half of the Mugello MotoGP race, the cold, hard reality of 2025 sunk in. If Pecco Bagnaia isn't competitive at Mugello, and doesn't have a bike he is comfortable with after nine rounds, and if Alex Márquez can't beat Marc at a track which favors the Gresini Ducati rider and not his brother, then the title fight is effective over.

Yes, there are still 481 points on the table, so Alex Márquez' deficit of 40 points is eminently bridgeable, and even Bagnaia's 110 point deficit is not quite out of reach. But that is a purely mathematical exercise. Marc Márquez could decide not to turn up at Assen, and still arrive at the Sachsenring leading the championship.
